Dual Quad Core Processors and Final Cut Studio
by Stuart Coburn on Mar 19, 2009 at 5:21:08 pm

I'm sat here watching the blue render bar creep along in FCP, again! and i've been wondering if all the processing power i have is being utilised by the various facets of Studio?
It's a dual 3gig quad core intel xeon, 8 gig of ram with Studio 2 installed, so it should eat through pretty much anything with relative ease.

Do i need to do something to enable multi processor capability?

Is there somewhere i can check if it is enabled?

Am i just being impatient and forgetting about the days when i sat waiting for 2 hours for my dual P3 editsuite to make a DVD?

What are you rendering? Render times are wholly based on what you're doing.

Lots of filters? gonna take longer

Lots of layers? gonna take longer.

Rendering one format to another? gonna take longer.

Fastest render speeds are accomplished by getting everything into format before you start to edit, apply minimal filters, use minimal video tracks.

FCP is not yet efficient at using 8 cores. To get a better idea of this open the cpu usage window in the Activity monitor utility. Fundementally, it's just too old a piece of software, and needs a major re-write, and a better OS to utilise the cores. Interestingly, Compressor is fantastic at some 8-core action, but was presumably a lot less work to re-write.

We're all hoping that FCS3, OSX10.6 and the new Grand Central code in it will speed things up. Who knows, you might see some progress on this in the next 3-4 months.
