ProRes Recapture

OK, I have looked around and cannot find anything on this subject.
When I capture a project in HDV settings in Easy Setup and then delete the media files once the project is done, I can recapture those files by putting the tape in the deck, right click on the offline media and do a batch capture. No problem.
Why can't I do this when I use the ProRes setting in Easy setup? I dump the media, go to batch capture the files and the deck just starts recording at the current point. Is this ProRes' major downfall.

M.D.,
I don't think there's an answer for this in my tutorial, but I think it's a limitation of how the HDV-ProRes caption window works. It does not handle batches, it is a capture now function at this point in time. It may be able to do this in future versions, but for now it's kinda primitive.

Yes, this a pitfall to capturing HDV as ProRes via FW. Those ProRes files are essentially your new masters because it is limited to "capture now" and no source TC is recorded. Also, in my experience HDV has been problematic when trying to get frame accurate recaptures even when editing natively.

Is there anyway to have my cake and eat it too? I like how HDV can recreate a project that I have removed the media for, but I love my options with ProRes.

Yep, get a Kona card. You can capture your HDV to any format. DVCPro HD, ProRes or even Uncompressed HD. This is what we do with all our HDV footage.

Hi Walter,
I haven't done any work with HDV yet -- all DVCPRO-HD -- but I'm going to be getting an HDV project soon. I have a Kona 3 card. How do you capture HDV with your Kona card? There must be a deck that I don't have that will give you something other than a Firewire out I guess, huh?

There's several from Sony that give you either Component or HD-SDI outputs directly from the deck.
In our case we're running the basic Sony M15U with Component output. The video and audio output of that deck passes through an AJA HD10AVA converter which then gives me an HD-SDI stream with embedded audio. Works great.
If I were to purchase a new HDV deck today, I would go with one that has RS-422 control instead of Firewire. That's about the only complaint as the FW control can be a bit slow to log footage.

Amen, Brother!!! I'll second that frustration.
