Mac Pro Graphics upgrade
by Bruce Stubblefield on Oct 28, 2008 at 6:37:56 pm

Hello,
Running FCS2 on an 8-core 2.8 GHZ with two HD 2600 XT cards. Cutting a feature in Pro Res HQ 2048 x 1024 files. We get a lot of "can't render with this video card" type messages and think we need a more powerful card. Have been told there's problems running two cards in one machine, but removing one of them doesn't affect the problem.
I see a lot of negative posts about the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT for use with FCS2, but this is the card that Apple pushes on their upgrade page.
We don't need Kona-type HD output, just the right graphics card that can handle 2048 x 1024 files with titles and various VFX elements to many shots. Can anyone recommend the best card or best value solution for this issue?
thanks
Bruce S

Do you have an HD capture card?

The two cards in one mahcine can't help, but also I'd imagine that whatever plug in your are uisng to render graphics can't extend beyond a 1K geometry. That'd be my first guess.

Bruce,

FCP is pretty rubbish when it comes to management of video memory, you probably got something like this:

"Can't render at the requested size and depth"

There are two ways round this which I have to give Gabriele at Noise Industries the credit for:-

1) Save your project, quit and re-launch Final Cut Pro. More often than not, Final Cut Pro will render the sequence on a fresh start.

2) Make sure that you are rendering in 8-bit YUV:

- Open the Sequence Settings window and switch to the Video Processing tab
- Select the "Render in 8-bit YUV" option

Hope that helps

Peter

thanks,
apparently we're already using those settings, and restarts have no effect.

OK, not the answer you wanted, but can you render in chunks and then reassemble?

Also, can you do me a favor and copy and paste your timeline into a 1920x1080 timeline and see if it renders. Please? Just for a goof?
