Sony V1U capture issues
by David Roth Weiss on Oct 16, 2008 at 11:34:07 pm

I've searched every thread here without a solution.

Brand new client owned Sony V1U is misbehaving with FCP6. FCP is seeing TC breaks that don't exist.

These are not camera starts and stops.

FCP is creating 4 to 5 separate clips per minute of running time. So, if I shoot a minute of anything, then turn off th camera and digitize that one clip, FCP creates 5 incomplete clips.

This is happening at 1080i and 30p, using HDV 1080i60 Easy Setup, which I know to be the proper Easy Setup.

Any solutions out there?

TIA,
David

Capture using a capture card to ProRes...or DVCPRO HD. OR...try the Chris method of capturing HDV as ProRes via firewire...

Hi Shane!

I usually work with HDV using the "Poisson method," and I was gonna try that, but I didn't really want to do it in this case, as I'm setting up an entirely new multi-cam workflow for this client. But I may have to.

BTW, is your suggestion based upon a known issue with these cameras?

Nope...this is based on not liking the HDV format. I get out of that format as soon as I can. But I have only worked with HDV twice. Thank goodness.

What's the whole configuration of your set-up, computer, camera, drives, how are they all connected, how are the drives formatted? It should work. I assume FCP is recognizing the camera and accepting in and out points correctly.

[Tom Wolsky] "What's the whole configuration of your set-up, computer, camera, drives, how are they all connected, how are the drives formatted?"

Hi Tom!

G5 - dual 2.3Ghz
5.5Gb RAM
4-bay 2Tb SATA Raid-0 with 225mbps throughput - Mac extended (non-journaled)

Camera is recognized via firewire 400 and in/outs are recognized, etc., etc., etc.

BTW, the same config works perfectly with a Z1, it's these V1Us that are causing me problems.

Very wierd science going on here... Let me know if you have an idea. I'm stumped.

Don't understand it. You are using the rear FireWire port on the G5, aren't you? That's the only thing I can think of.

I guess I'd try trashing prefs, repairing permissions and reboot. See if it will capture into a new user.

Actually I wasn't... If that turns out to be the issue I'll kiss you. Well, how about I let one of my dogs kiss you?

I guess it couldn't hurt to try all the standard things...

I'll keep ya posted.

UPDATE - Isn't this the pits
by David Roth Weiss on Oct 17, 2008 at 3:14:16 am

So, after exhaustive testing I've discovered that, with the Sony V1U, I can accurately capture HDV to ProRes on the fly via Firewire (using the Poisson method), but I can't capture HDV native via Firewire without vast numbers of phony tiimecode breaks.

That's simply bassakwards from the way it should work and did work. It seems to me that Apple has messed-up its firewire protocol somewhere along the line in one of their QT or ProApps updates. Many of those posting similar issues here over the last few months, that appeared to be dropped frames, were apparently related to messy changes to the firewire protocol.

The latest version of Leopard, but without the latest security update.

Re: UPDATE - Isn't this the pits

Well, if you're running 10.5.5 it blows my theory out of the water. Something changed for the worse in Apple's firewire with the release of Leopard, and it's been wrecking havoc on Avid's older, firewire based hardware (Adrenaline and Mojo). The firewire changed so it couldn't keep up with the demands of the Avid hardware.

10.5.5 fixed these issues, so I thought--if you weren't on 10.5.5--the firewire bug was biting you with the Sony cam, but I guess not.

Best of luck getting it figured out. Very frustrating when something should work, doesn't, and there's no logical reason why.

Michael.

[Michael Hancock] "Very frustrating when something should work, doesn't, and there's no logical reason why."

And, its the little things that count. The entire workflow now has to be changed because straight forward firewire capture is broken. It's pretty infuriating.

Thanks to you Michael and to Shane and Tom as well.

Chris,

You just reminded me, I have a clone of 6.01 under Tiger. I'll try that out... Just goes to show, rants can become fruitful...

Before you totally rip your hair out....

Check and see how the camera records timecode. The default is Auto. This causes these kinds of problems every single time. Set your camera to DF or NDF and all of your timecode issues will disappear. we had the exact problem you have and this was the answer for us.

I wish that were it Wayne, but it's not. I've had it set to DF for some time. Maybe I'll try NDF...

Hmmm... Ok...

Two things.

Have you checked to make sure that you have your FCP set Time Code Breaks to Warn After Capture,
and have you reset your prefs?

I'm sure you have, but just checking.

Oh yeah!!! I did it all. Odd thing is, while regular firewire capture is completely f---ed-up, capture to ProRes is flawless. So, looks like I'll be using ProRes exclusively for HDV as I've been doing prior. But, before it was by choice...

Wow, this thread just jolted my memory (Oldtimer's Disease) about a week ago I was trying to capture to ProRes via FW on my G5 (same setup as DRW's) and it kept bailing on the capture after a few seconds. I think that machine is still on 10.5.4. It still captures via FW fine for DV material, so I dunno.

Have a wonderful day.
