XDCAM field flicker on digibeta recording?
by Kevin Maguire on Oct 16, 2008 at 12:36:25 pm

Hi there,

I've just ETT a 1 hour prog onto a Sony M2000 and there is a field flicker problem on playback.

The original footage came from XDCAM and was interlaced. I frame-rated the sequence by changing the sequence settings from 'field' to 'frame'.

Playing from FCP to my Sony broadcast monitor everything looked framed and flicker-free, but the playback from digi (when jogged) revealed a difference between the two fields (sharp then soft), causing the field flicker.

The easy solution is to put a max deflicker filter over the whole timeline, but I can't understand where the problem is coming from.

Surely if I deinterlace, one set of fields is duplicated, and the digi recorder shouldn't see a difference.

I did a test using a sequence set to fields, and putting the deinterlace filter over the footage, but the result was exactly the same; sharp/soft.

So, is there a known issue with the compression on XDCAM, causing this kind of problem?

Thanks in advance.

[Kevin Maguire] "The original footage came from XDCAM and was interlaced. I frame-rated the sequence by changing the sequence settings from 'field' to 'frame'."

why did you frame-rate it and not leave it interlaced?

changing that usually introduces problems down the line later.
Better to just leave interlaced...as interlaced unless your client requires a 24psf deliverable.

if you change it back to fields as it was originally it should be fine.

The director wanted it frame-rated for a 'film' look.

It can look like film with 24p cadence and all and still be interlaced.

It will have to be if you are laying back to Digibeta...its not progressive.
