Is something wrong with my RAM?
by Adam Claude Jones (AdamCJ) on Oct 10, 2008 at 4:22:37 am

I decided to upgrade my RAM today but I don't think FCP is using it properly or maybe FCP just can't see it. In the system settings only about 65% is listed, even if I set it to 100%. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Adam, Download "Rember" for free and it will test your ram for you. You can also run Apple Hardware Test disc which should have been included with the machine. If you use rember, it will tell you there's an error and you'll have to do a trial and error by pulling the modules out and rerunning Rember to ID the bad module. Hope this helps!
Kind Regards,
Chris K.

How much RAM did you put in? FCP is only going to use 4gb. any more than that gets used by any other programs you run at the same time.

I have 4GB. But FCP sees much less.
But the mac itself sees all the 4gb. So I don't think it's the memory. It must be within FCP. What could it be?

Read the following Apple KnowledgeBase article for the answer: Maximum memory usage in Final Cut Pro is 2.5 GB

Thanks. I'm glad it's normal. But can other programs like Shake or Color use more memory?
