Shooting, Editing,Viewing and Exporting PAL in FCP
by Ashley James on Oct 9, 2008 at 1:36:01 am

I am about to embark on a project for European TV. I'm using a JVC GYHD250 using HDV 25/720P and will output in PAL via firewire. I'm importing this footage into my new 2.8 Quad. which has a 4 TB RAID and 10 gb of RAM. The client says I can deliver the final HD program in a file on a hard drive and ship to Europe. What would a good workflow be for this project? Should I import footage using ProRes,or Pro Res HQ and forget HDV? Will this they allow me to finish in PAL HD? I also need to decide on what I/O box and monitor to use for this project as well as for my Betacam SP and DV projects. The IOHD has been suggested but what about the MXO2 which nobody seems to have any experience on. I have a new 23" ACD that I know is not great for color grading but will it be good enough picture and allow me to view PAL & NTSC HD? Do I need an MXO? or can I get away with a AJA HDP?

Lots of questions, but the bottom line, from start to finish, acquisition to delivery, what do you guys suggest?

Thanks ahead of time

Hey Ashley,
Unless your editing will have many layers, I would suggest you capture and edit HDV. You have the option to set your sequence as HDV and Render to Prores. This option is only available when working with HDV or EX-1 footage. When you have your time-line inished, change the sequence codec to Prores and export.
