You're most like dropping frames because:
a) your hard drive is too full
b) you need to do a "Mixdown" in the Sequence >> Render Only drop down menu
c) "Full" is not checked in Sequence >> Render All before rendering.

Or d) your hard drives are too slow for the material that you're using- FW400 for uncompressed, for example.
