Disappearing Patch Panel Sources
by Rob Chinn on Oct 4, 2008 at 9:40:10 pm

I was wondering if anyone has run across a similar problem recently in FCP 6.0.4. I was at a client doing some training this week and we ran into this problem on several MacBook Pros with OS 10.5.4.

For some unknown and random reason, the source side controls of the patch panel (sometimes it was just the video ones, mostly just the audio ones, but sometimes it was all of them). I couldn't pin down a reason or anything in particular that anyone was doing to cause it. I haven't seen it happen on either one of my machines. The only solution for it I could find was to quit FCP and restart it, and that seemed to bring them back, at least for a little while. Resetting the patch panel had no effect.

Any ideas?

Got a screen shot?

Note that only the tracks included in the Sequence will show up on the right, and only the tracks that a Viewer clip has will show up on the left. so it's possible to put a video only clip in the Viewer, and no audio patches will be on the left, etc..

Jerry,

Thanks for the response. No, I didn't get a screen shot. I'll be back there again this coming Thursday, so I'll get one then.

I understand what you're saying. The only ones that were missing were the source side. I didn't see every case where people said they didn't have them, but at least 2 of the cases I saw had a video clip loaded in the viewer that definitely had audio, but there were no source side patch plugs, video or audio.

I'll keep a closer eye on it this week, and I'll be sure to grab a screen shot and let you know what I find.

Rob

Rob,
This can happen if you patch source tracks to timeline tracks and then delete the relevant timeline tracks (if autopatching is not activated).
Try adding tracks to your timeline or turning on autopatching ?

Control Click in the gray area between the green "speaker" icon and the audio track indicators in the audio portion on the left of the timeline. You will get the option to "reset panel". This should fix your missing patch source problem.

Tom,

Thanks for your reply. As stated in my original post, I tried resetting the patch panel, but it had no effect the multiple times I tried.

The source patches are always controlled by the content of the viewer as Jeff said. I have never seen this not work. But if there is a glitch make sure you trash your preferences, repair permissions and reboot.

All the best,

Will,

Thanks for your reply. I don't think any tracks were deleted, as the people I was working with were newbies, but I suppose that it is a possibility. No one stated they had deleted a track, but I suppose that doesn't mean they didn't. It happened multiple times on multiple machines though, but....

I will check into it when I am there again on Thursday.

you can force source patches to disappear by using the keyboard shortcuts and targeting a track number that doesn't exist eg if you have just two video tracks then press F6 followed by 3 ... and you can get it back by re-targeting an extant track eg F6, 1. Same goes for audio tracks (using F7 and F8). See if pressing F7, 1 and F8, 2 will recover these errant patches
