Hi there,
I'm looking to capture a ton of HDV footage that I shot on Sony Z1U's, using the Sony HVR-M10 deck & firewire. I can't get FCP to communicate with the deck much. The connection is ok, and twice... somehow... I've been able to get FCP to control the deck, but still no picture. Please help!

Try trashing your preferences for FCP, then set the "Easy Setup" to HDV 1080i60.
Also have no other firewire devices connected to your Mac. If you must capture to a FW drive, get another bus for it. A FireWire card will do that for you.

thanks Jerry!
I think I've already done that. I can control the deck through FCP, so there is SOME communication. But I can't get any picture. When I go to capture, it says "Capturing Clip - waiting for data from device". Then after a few seconds, it says:
"No Data from Device
Capture was aborted due to lack of incoming data from device. Check your connections and that the deck is playing"
I can see the deck is playing. Not sure what else to do...

PS - The deck is the ONLY thing hooked up to my iMac right now, other than an external hard drive.

mark do you have the deck manually set to output HDV over
the firewire connection?
The "AUTO" setting hardly ever works. I have an m25u
and I always have to set it for HDV or DV (whatever is on tape)
or I get weirdness like you describe.

Hi Mark,
I don't use FCP, but I do use a HVR M10. I assume you have chosen your input settings to accept HDV footage as opposed to DV. If so, make sure you set the to in the M10 menu. If it's not that or a bad cable (have you tried a different firewire cable?), I don't know what else to suggest - as I said, I don't use FCP.

Oops! Some of my words are missing from my previous post... sorry about that. It should read:
... If so, make sure you set the i.Link Convert to OFF in the M10 menu. If it's not that or a bad cable (have you tried a different firewire cable?), I don't know what else to suggest - as I said, I don't use FCP.
