Sequence settings
by Brian McBride on Sep 29, 2008 at 10:56:50 am

Hi there,

I often work with HDV footage and SD footage on the same timeline in FCP 6. Normally my sequence settings are set to HDV as it helps when importing Motion files that are created as HDV quality, therfore these Motion files don't need to render on my FCP timeline. I am currently working with an editor that has advised to always set the sequence settings in FCP to the quality that you are going to want to use in Compressor...i.e. HD-DVD - have your FCP sequence settings on an HD setting. And for SD-DVD - have your FCP sequence settings on DV-PAL SD. He advises that if this is not done then you don't get such a good quality outcome in Compressor.

My question (if you can understand the above)...is he wrong or right?

Thanks!!
Brian

There's no wrong and no right. The answer depends entirely upon your needs and your client's needs, both now and into the future. If you handle everything in HD you can always output SD, but the opposite in not true. And BTW, Compressor does very good downconversions.

Hi David,

Thanks for your response. So can safely say that it doesn't matter what your requence settings are in Final Cut Pro...when you export the sequence to Compressor, the Compressor settings applied are what effects the final outcome?

Thanks,

Brian

More or less... However, I want to be perfectly clear, choosing the proper sequence settings is not unimportant. If you've made a mistake, and edited using the wrong format, you can't just expect Compressor to compensate, without any consequences. For instance, if you edit 16x9 material in a 4x3 sequence, then try to output a 16x9 file using Compressor, you will have soem might bad looking video. Okay?

So if you edit HD footage with SD sequence settings (NTSC DV) it is obviously ok since you are usually outputting for SD broadcast. But if I want to output for HD broadcast or DVD should I be using a compressor setting that matches my HD footage? (720p or 1080i?) Am I not outputting the highest quality i can by using an NTSC DV SD sequence setting?

Thanks!
