Editing AVI files in FCP 6.0.4

I'm trying to import AVI files from a flipcam into FCP 6.0.4. They will import and play in viewer, but when I edit them into a sequence, I find I have to render them. Once I do so, the file in sequence plays with black flashes as if it's at a different frame rate or codec. I downloaded and installed XVID codec into the Quicktime Library of my HD (I know this works because I can import the files into Avid Express Pro now and they read).
Any suggestions as to how to get these AVI files to be readable in FCP 6.0.4?

Search the forums for FlipCam, we've been getting posts like this for a year or so. You can also search for "converting AVI to QT."
Best advice, since FCP is a Quicktime product, is to convert those lousy AVIs to a useful QT format. You may need a PC to do that but we hear that VisualHub can do it for you, shareware, about $50.
