VO/Voice recording in FCP & Monitoring Maestro Duet
by mark palmos (Mark Palmos) on Sep 23, 2008 at 10:38:37 am

Hi guys,
The studio where i do most my freelance work has bought an Apogee Duet Maestro.
I can do VO recording to the timeline (albeit buggy and I have to restart FCP initially to get audioi input)

But two questions.

1/ I cannot seem to monitor the recording (headphones plugged into the duet have no sound, and FCP does not output the voice when using the VO feature, so i cannot use the aja output.

2/ I would like to record voice and NOT do the direct to timeline VO recording sometimes. Is there a way to do this in FCP without recording video, and also it seems the capture window does not input the Duet, I can only ever get a level when using the VO tool.

Any help would be much appreciated.
tx
Mark

Hi,

I think this is the answer to the questions, in case anybody wants to know, and if someone knows an easier way, please let me know!

Q1/
1/ set FCP Audio Video settings Audio Playback to Duet (the crucial step)
2/ on maestro mixer, make sure To Hardware is set to Out L-R, Input 1 is full blast, and on
3/ maestro control, put volume output at -10 or so
4/ monitor headphones in duet
5/ to play back what you have captured over your speakers via the capture card you use, you have to set the audio playback settings in FCP AV settings back to what they were, for example, Aja Kona.

Q2
I dont think FCP can record VO without video, so if you are like me and dont like to record video for nothing, rather use the VO tool, stick a slug on a timeline and copy paste it a few dozen times to create a video track to do the VO to...

Mark,

Shane gave me a great heads-up on using the Voiceover Tool in FCP, which I use all the all the time for scratch track now. However, I have a Snowball USB mic, so it may work differently.

In any case, Shane's very simple and is and I quote, "I make a new sequence and lay 40 min of slug on it, then use the VO Tool."

That was he he said, but it works... BTW, I often have to unplug the USB mic, replug it back in, then shut the V.O. Tool down and then restart it again, just to "rejigger" things. But, I never have to reboot the computer.

>Q2 I dont think FCP can record VO without video

It can, you just need to set yourself up a preset for it:

In Final Cut Pro menu > Audio / Video Settings window >> Capture Presets tab select any one of the Capture presets and press the Duplicate button.
Then in the Capture Preset Editor window:
Set the Name to "Audio Only" or something meaningful.
Set the Quicktime Video Settings >> Digitizer popup to None
Set the Quicktime Audio Settings >> Device popup to whatever your chosen input device is.

You should be good to go after that
