Stretching when printing to video
by Cory Chu-Keenan on Sep 18, 2008 at 8:45:34 pm

Hello,

This is my first post and I have a very specific problem that I can't find the answer to. I shot a TV commercial in HDV 16:9 format (using a Canon HV30 camera), and I've already down-converted to DV by copying my edited and completed HDV footage onto a NTSC timeline to please the TV station's formatting requirements, and then I rendered it. I changed my camera settings from HDV to DV, printed to video, but when the footage played on my cam's screen, the footage was stretched from left to right and making people look wide and fat.

I don't know why this is. Everything is normal (letter boxed, 4:3) when I play it in my canvas. What's the deal here? Am I using the wrong settings? All I want to do is print to video and it seems like it should be easy. Perhaps it's my camera settings, but I can't seem to figure that out either.

Thank you for any help you can give!

Hello,

I thought I solved my problem but it has actually just evolved into a new one that still has to do with "print to video." I've taken the HDV footage, created a Quicktime movie in NTSC SD 4:3, which is what the TV station requires, and opened it up using Final Cut Pro. When I drag the movie onto my timeline, it plays perfectly on the Canvas. The audio comes through the camera, but the image does not, except when I move the cursor to anywhere on the timeline in which case a still image of the video shows up on the cam's viewer. So, in short, the audio plays while the video appears stuck. I have all my settings to DV NTSC and all that in FCP and my camera (Canon HV30).

I've been working on this problem for a loooong time. Thank you greatly for your help.
