Outputting for SD Television VS Computers and the web
by Malcolm Oliver on Sep 16, 2008 at 11:07:00 pm

I'm outputting some docs I shot for a local client, the main plan is for web use.

I shot them at 480 24p.

When I output a standard def 4:3 29.97 NTSC format as a quicktime, the quality looks decent but it still looks degraded. When I print to tape it looks far better.

Does this have anything to do with the fact I'm looking at my Quicktime on an LCD computer screen?

Is there a more appropriate codec for something destined for the web, like h.264, that I can find in Compressor or FCP?

thanks

- Malcolm

Yes, Compressor has multiple setups for the Web.

Question. Why would you ever output 29.97 for the web when your footage is 24?

I'm outputting material for television and for archiving. The "broadcast" is for the web but it'll kept in digital format and hard copy for however long it needs to stored/accessed.

So what I'm really looking for is a little clarity on outputting for web/computer screens not televisions.

Output 23.98, not 29.97. You can't have pulldown video in a web clip. It will look horrific. This is actually a common amateur mistake.

Like Walter said, there are several h264 settings in Compressor you should use.
