installation and working discs

I am a newcomer to Mac after 25 years on Windows (Vegas 8.0 Pro) so I am still confused about how Mac handles the files.
I installled FCP and it asked me about the discs to work with. As a novice I put the same SATA II array I used on Windows. After a while it hung up and if I tried to open it again it tries to load but then again at some point it hangs up. I prepared a new fresh array of disks formatted on mac but the problem persists. I reinstalled FCP over the old files but it does not work either. Any hint, please?

Hi Carlo,
You need to format your media discs as Extended MacOX "Not Journaled".
Make sure that you can read and write: Click the HD icon, Comm-i. Will open the Info window. Look in Share & Permissions.
Open the FC's Users Preferences and set the Scratch Disk as you need.

Rafael:
Thanks. I want to reinstall from scratch. Where and what files do Ineed to throw to the waste basket to clean all preferences and other files?

There is no way to uninstall Final Cut Studio from your system drive. There are simply too many resources that are installed all over the system. To ensure a good solid reinstall, you need to reformat your system drive and install the application from scratch.

Explain a little better what you mean by hang up. I think that you may be experiences similar issues to what a lot of other people are experiencing and that is problems with the driver for the esata card on your MBP
The issue stems from the chip that is used in every esata card I can find for the mac, they say that the driver for the chip is good with leopard, but the driver was made a year before leopard was even released.
I've had issues where that bad driver has caused FCP to crash, restart the computer, and kernel panic. It ONLY happens when I use cards that use that driver. I have had to resort to using FW800 in the until the chip manufacturer gets off there behind and updates the driver.

Hi Zane,
I haven't think about the eSATA because I'm working with the LaCie since few months and not a single problem.
Carlo,
Take it easy and don't be so impulsive reinstalling everything at the first problem.
Try to isolate the issue. First make sure that FC works OK with the default Scratch Disk (your system driver). Then try with the external HDs.
At the moment you have to make sure that you have de-installed FC as needs to be. Look for the FC Troubleshooting docs in the Apple support and fallow the steps.
Cheers,
rafael
BTW you can download he driver here: http://www.siliconimage.com/support/index.aspx?pid=0&cid=0&

Well, I cleaned as recommended in Apple support, installed again FCP, downloaded the siliconimage3132r5 driver, installed it and the problem persists. After loading some features of FCP it stops loading and fades. I gess this means reinstalling the OS.
A question: Installing the OS should not affect the windows partition. Am I right? I am backing up everything, anyway
Thanks

Zane:
How do I do this?
I can take the card out of the slot (I already did it) but when trying to open FCP it does the same rutine, tries to open and then fades.
How can I tell FCP to search for other drives, the main one in the laptop or a firewire or a USB, I have plenty of them connected.
Thanks
Carlo

Hi Zane,
And where the "siliconimage3132r5 driver" comes from?
I don't even see it in the Siliconimage web site.
I'm working with the "SSiI3132_1.1.9u."
Is the one that comes with the LaCie card and one of the three available in the Siliconimage web site.
The 3132r5 as I said do not appear.
Carlo,
The first recommendation when working with FC, is no to use USB drives.
And what you should do is to unplug all your external HDs and try to make work FC only with your system drive. Trash your preffs and try to boot.
If you reinstall MacOX on top of the old system this shouldn't affect your Windows partition.

Silicon Image is the manufacturer of the chip that is used in the card they say that there card id compatible with leopard however the date on the base driver is OLDER then leopard is so something is not quire right. Yes the date on the raid driver is close to the release of leopard, but keep in mind that is a additional driver for raid support not the driver to just use the card.
Every esata card that works with mac that I have seen has the same chip in it even though the label on the card may be from what ever company, inside the card they all have the same chip.
I have downloaded drivers from every esata card that states it is compatible with the macbook pro. When looking at the package contents of every one of them thy all contain the same SSiI3132 inside.
Im attempting to contact Silicon Image the maker of the chip and driver, however they are making it difficult because they list no email for support.

[Zane Barker]" but keep in mind that is a additional driver for raid support not the driver to just use the card. " OK. Understood.
I'm working with two small eSATA HDs. No raid.

Rafael/Zane:
I canīt make FCT start, it hangs (fades) at mid load depending on the drive I put in it, so I can not make the test with the system drive.I do not find what preferences to erase either.
Would you mind to take a phone call from me to talk about the issue. I do not think that by this way I can get to a conclusion soon. Iīd like your opinion of some other solutions like Firewire 800 raid enclosures such as the Galaxy. I can put in ther my Seagates Sata II drives and forget about the LaCie enclosures.
Below my email if you want to send me your phone number
Thanks

Well, after being working with computers for 25 years you never get amazed enough with things that happens. I tried and tried to get FCP work with my Seagate SATA II discs on two LaCie enclosures and never could work it out, the sil 3132 Express/34 Sata Link controller seemed to be not compatible with Mac and TCP. Just when I am leaving to Miami to pick up several items, among with is the Sonnet Exp Card, all of a sudden, while switching to Vegas in Win and FCP in Mac I forgot to take the card off when going to Mac. My surplise is that at the top of the bar it appeared the card and FCP recognized the discs, in mirror, as the scratch disc and it is working fine.
The only logical explanation is that the OS found the suitable drivers in the internet and it installed it by itself or the OS made and upgrade by intelf (within a package of software upgrades) and now the drivers are working.

Zane / Rafael:
Finally after some trials and restarts I got rid of the SATA II blocking and FCP opened and I assigned the internal drive to get started with the software. This proves, as you stated that the problem is the driver of the card. So I have two things to test now: one is to try with another SATA II card like SATA ON THE GO from SONNET, the Sales Manages told me it will work with the system, the other one is to get a Galaxy Firewire enclosure and put in there my seagates.(http://www.shop4tech.com/item6035.html. The GRAID2 uses Hitachi drives that I do not like, I read reviews and know about friends with damaged HDDs.
Any advise about the latter?
Cheers
Carlo

Hi Carlo,
Great you got it. Sorry I can not help you about the storage, I do not work with raids.
Zane probably can tell you something.
In my web is my phone number if you need it. Here we are 5 or 6 hours ahead of Europe.
Cheers,
