24Psf to 29.97 output to tape
by Craig Thomas on Sep 12, 2008 at 1:52:54 am

I have just finished a TV spot shot in HDCam 24 Psf. I captured it at 23.98 fps and edited the piece at 23.98 (1080p ProRes)
All of my past work has been direct to DVD and mastered to 24p. This project is going to NTSC 29.97 broadcast.
My question is what is the best way to nest this in a 4:3 sequence (what is the best setting) and how do I convert it to 29.97? I will be mastering to a HDCam deck.
Would the whole process been easier if I had captured at 29.97?
Thank You
Craig

Kona3 will down convert it on the fly to NTSC 29.97.

Mac 10.5.4
FCP 6.04
2 x 2.8ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon
16gb RAM
7 TB Maxx RAID
AJA Kona3

How are you going to master an SD program to HD Cam and why do that when you timeline is HD?

Do you have a Kona card?

Sorry, I meant that I was going to master to Digibeta.
I use a Blackmagic HD extreme card.
I want to nest the HD sequence into a NTSC (29.97) letterbox and output to Digibeta.
Will nesting do the job of converting to 29.97? Or do I need to export the HD sequence to quicktime and run it through Cinema Tools? I can't get my mind around this one.
Thanks
Craig

[Craig Thomas] "Will nesting do the job of converting to 29.97?"

Not well. Do you have after effects?

Yes, in fact that is what I primarily work in. Just thought that there was a direct way through FCP.
If I do use AE, can you tell me the best steps?
Also, should I have captured the footage from the HDCam deck to SD in the first place?
Thank you so much.
Craig

[Craig Thomas] "Also, should I have captured the footage from the HDCam deck to SD in the first place? "

That's up to you. I work in HD for SD deliveries a fair amount, but some people will tell you not to. It's a lot easier to down convert to an SD master from an HD program, than it is to reconform an HD shot, SD edited program in case you need an HD master in the future.

For After effects, make a 720x486 23.976 fps timeline with a D1 pixel aspect ratio (0.9).

Take your FCP exported 1080 psf movie and drop it in this sequence and the choose Layer > Transform > Fit to comp width. You should now see a letter boxed version of your HD movie.

Add the comp to your render queue. In the render settings, change the rendering to lower field first and the pulldown option to WWSSW (the pulldown pattern doesn't really matter, but this will ensure your render starts on an A frame).

Set your codec in the output module (i'd suggest 10 bit Uncompressed for SD) and render away.

Bring that render back in to FCP and output. Don't forget your audio.

Jeremy

So the Blackmagic HD extreme card can't do realtime conversion of HD to SD
like the AJA KONA 3 can? I looked at the marketing info on their site
and it's not really spelled out that it does this.

As far as the KONA 3 card goes, I use this feature regularly to output my
HD shows to DigiBeta centercut.

Thanks,
Dan
