Video playback form external monitor only shows freeze frame
by Steven Worsley on Sep 9, 2008 at 2:24:06 pm

I am trying to use a HDTV as a playback device through DVI and Final Cut's video playback. I managed to get it to work, however it has now stopped working and only produces a still frame. When I hit play it will play fine in the timeline but displays only a still frame on the second monitor. I have made sure that the settings under video playback are set to full screen and that 'all frames' is selected.

Even when I play back on Main the image on the main monitor only displays a still frame until the second monitor is unplugged.

Am I missing something?

Mine did this a few weeks ago and all of my settings were correct as well. A good old fashioned shutdown and restart seemed to fix the issue.

Check your sequence settings too, specifically your aspect ratio, pixel aspect ratio and Compressor settings. I've noticed weirdness like that too with an external monitor and those settings were changed incorrectly.

Thanks,
Mike

A mismatch between sequence settings and your Easy Setup settings will cause this behaviour with a Decklink card. However, hooking and HDTV via DVI - who knows. It is certainly not a recommended way to externally view as issues like correct display of interlace and color balance will be a problem.

If your HDTV has HDMI, then a Decklink intensity card might be a much better option. An alternative is the Matrox MXO. A search of the COW forum will bring up Shane Ross's article.
