Gray Video Hit on Layoff From FCP
by Adam Stencil on Sep 4, 2008 at 10:04:21 pm

Recently when laying off to a digibeta tape, I'm getting a gray area on the trailer of the sequence. When I use Edit to Tape the sequence will lay down fine, but then leave a gray patch of video which looks like a simple video hit and then it goes back to black. I'm laying off to a Sony Digibeta DVW-A500, from a Mac Pro 2x3 GHz Quad-Core Intel. The computer should be plenty fast, I'm wondering if it's the deck.

I've also tried adjusting the trailer of black in the Edit to Tape setup. My AJA Kona 3 card is set to go to 'black' when not sending out a video signal. I've also tried it with a Blackmagic card and get the same problem. Any thoughts?

It sounds like you are doing an Assemble edit to the tape and what you may be seeing is the point at which the recording stops and before the deck mutes the output to black. Either pre-black your tape and do an Insert edit yp lay off your show or manually do another assemble edit at the end of your program to add more black/track to the end.
You could also add Slug to the end of your program causing it to record additional black after the program material ends.
Tom
