FCP 6.0.4 not recognizing P2 AUDIO MXF files!

FCP 6.0.4 not recognizing P2 AUDIO MXF files!
by Colin Williams on Sep 4, 2008 at 1:50:09 pm

Hey all,

I am working in FCP 6.0.4 on a dual 2.5 G5 running Tiger 10.04.11 with QT 7.5. All subject files had been captured from a p2 store directly to a G4 Powerbook and backed up onto a WD My Book Firewire drive. From the powerbook, both audio and video mxf files were viewable from QT and FCP just fine.

Now I am importing those files into the G5 using the Log and Transfer. I imported the VIDEO contents without issue and are playing fine. However, when I attempt to do that with the AUDIO folder in the same CONTENTS folder it gives me the following warning:

"AUDIO" contents unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."

Any ideas. I am in a crunch and need some help. Thanks in advance.

I may be misunderstanding what you are saying, however when you select log and transfer in FCP select the "reel" folder that contains all the files you transfered form the p2 card. Do not select indiviual folders. FCP should recognize the clips all whole pieces when imported this way. Ex. you shoot card 1. You create a folder called Reel01. You copy all the info ,contents folder, lstclip.txt, over to this folder from the p2 card. You connect your hard drive containing all your reels to your FCP rig and click the little folder with the plus on it in the log and transfer window. Select Reel01, not subfolders within the contents folder, and you should be good to go.

Tells me "unsupported media" when I try and do that. Do I have all the drivers I need?

UPDATE: in one of my folders the .XML files are missing. Not sure why. All the other CONTENTS folders have them. How critical are those? Please tell me that their not.

Which folder? It might be an empty one that all you need to do is recreate. Without ALL the folders being present, FCP will have issues importing the footage. So it is pretty critical to keep the FULL file structure intact.

And Alex is right, you don't import the AUDIO and VIDEO separately, you choose the CONTENTS folder and that brings in the clips...then when you import it ties audio and video together.

Re: FCP 6.0.4 not recognizing P2 AUDIO MXF files! - UPDATE
by Colin Williams on Sep 4, 2008 at 3:37:55 pm

Well the thing is, I just opened an older version of the FCP project file from my PowerBook (G4 1.25, FCP 5.0.1, OSX 10.3.9, QT 7.4.1) and its recognizing all the files just fine...INCLUDING the audio and even playing back in the preview pane of the desktop browser for each file when click on them.

Now once you import the whole CONTENTS folder into FCP using the 'Log and Transfer' feature. Do you begin? Or do you have to re-import it from a different operation. Because I did import the entire CONTENTS folder finally and it still places them in the Bin as individual folders (i.e., AUDIO, VIDEO, CLIPS..etc.). How do you marry them all?

Thanks for helping out. Hope this makes sense. I'm new to the workflow and need to figure this out.

Thanks.
Colin

Re: FCP 6.0.4 not recognizing P2 AUDIO MXF files! - UPDATE

I'm a little confused. When you go to log and transfer don't select the contents folder. Go up one level from there. Did you copy over the lstclip.txt file when you made your p2 backups? I was confused by your quote about the import into sperate bins thing. I think you are using the import function in FCP. Don't do that. Go File>Log & Transfer. This changed from FCP 5 when you went to file>import>p2. Then click the folder with the plus sign in the top left corner of the l & t window and select the top level folder for the reel you want to log and transfer. You don't import the clips in the traditional sense. Log and transfer will rewrap your mxf files as mov quicktime movies.

Re: FCP 6.0.4 not recognizing P2 AUDIO MXF files! - UPDATE
by Colin Williams on Sep 4, 2008 at 5:35:17 pm

FYI - I don't have the P2 Store OR the cards with me anymore. I'm working with what I transferred to the FW Drive.

Well I tried the Import>P2 from my FCP 5.0.1 Powerbook with the identical media and get the:

"One or more P2 clips failed to import; probable incomplete or corrupt clips."

But when I import the CONTENTS folder I can view, hear and move around both the video and audio clips in the timeline. I just have to manually marry the VIDEO and AUDIO together in the timeline.

What's going on? Very inconsistent.

Any thoughts?

I am vexed. I need to try and replicate what you are seeing on my MBP. I am running FCP 5.0.4 on it. Let me look into it a little bit. You mentioned you had this data in 2 place, one should always backup ones p2 cards, have you tried using your backups yet? What does you folder structure look like for clips Reel01>
lastclip.txt
contents>Audio
Clip
Icon
Proxy
Video
Voice
Does your "reel" contain all of the preceding folders?

Colin,

Email your contact info off list and I will try and give you a call as all this back an forth is giving me a headache. I think something is getting lost in translation.

[Colin Williams] "I just opened an older version of the FCP project file from my PowerBook (G4 1.25, FCP 5.0.1, OSX 10.3.9, QT 7.4.1) and its recognizing all the files just fine.."

Odd, since HD support for P2 did not arrive until version 5.0.4.

[Colin Williams] "once you import the whole CONTENTS folder into FCP using the 'Log and Transfer' feature. Do you begin? Or do you have to re-import it from a different operation."

You begin. You should have clips with either the "0008GH.mov" name, or the name you gave it in the L&T window (P2 import didn't allow you to name clips)...and the audio and video would be all in one clip. Ready to start cutting.

[Colin Williams] "Because I did import the entire CONTENTS folder finally and it still places them in the Bin as individual folders (i.e., AUDIO, VIDEO, CLIPS..etc.). How do you marry them all?"

What the heck are you doing? Doesn't sound like you are doing things right at all. Here are the two workflows for P2 Import. First, the FCP 6 method:

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/p2fcp6.php

Now what you need to do with FCP 5.0.4:

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/p2_workflow.php

If you are not doing either of those, then you are doing things wrong.

Those would be critical. Check around here and on the Apple forums as I know that I have read about software that can help "rebuild" some areas of the p2 files. Not entirely sure but it is worth a look. Try looking under xml repairs, xml missing. You may find that one of the programs like P2CMS from Panasonic will get it done.

Re: FCP 6.0.4 not recognizing P2 AUDIO MXF files!
by Colin Williams on Sep 4, 2008 at 6:19:58 pm

I think I may have found a solution except for some reason, one of the directories is missing all but the VIDEO, AUDIO and LASTCLIP.TXT folders.

I was able to successfully Log & Transfer one directory into the FCP 6.0.4 and in the process of attempting the others. But the one directory mentioned above will not transfer into FCP. And Panasonic's CMS app doesn't seem to recognize ANYTHING in that folder with the missing CLIP, VOICE, ICON & PROXY folders.

So if I could find a way to rebuild that ONE directory, I think I may be in the clear with all of this mess.

ANy other ideas? THanks so much for your time.

Colin

Well, if you have a CONTENTS folder with only VIDEO and AUDIO, the ONLY solution you have is Raylight, or some other MXF reading application. Maybe HD LOG or P2 Log will work here...or MXF4QT. WIthout the other folders, FCP will not import the footage at all. Even if you make folder and name them right, there is missing information, like the thumbnails in the CLIP folder.

I'd recommend RAYLIGHT for you now. Marries audio and video and is pretty easy to use.
