Cinema Tools 29.97 to 23.98
by Greg Carter on Aug 29, 2008 at 6:39:13 am

I am having the time of my life with a process that has worked time in and time out. If anyone could shed some light on my problem it would be greatly appreciated. Here's my issue. We are capturing from a DVCAM with footage that was shot on film (24FPS) and transfered over to DVCAM tape. We have a flex file that pretty much tells what the settings should be for capturing. On capture everything is fine. Video plays back perfect. But once we use Cinema Tools and do a reverse telecine and reconnect the media, the video is jerky. We have burned in time code, so we see that Cinema Tools is skipping frames. Some are duplicated, I think duplicate one are suppose to be there but for the CT to skip frames I know should not be there. We Play the video frame by frame and can clearly see, the skip or drop frames. I am at a lost on the problem. My Configuration is as follows:

BlackMagic HD Pro Dual Link
Black Magic Mini converter Analog to SDI
PowerPC G5 2.5ghz
3gigs of RAM
OSX 10.4.11
Quicktime 7.5

Here is the real funny part. We stated thinking it was something on capture. So, we used the same computer to capture the footage. Brought it to another G5 and did the reverse telecine and it worked perfectly. So, what am I missing here?

[Greg Carter] "We are capturing from a DVCAM with footage that was shot on film (24FPS) and transfered over to DVCAM tape."

It might have more to do with the film-tape transfer than your technique. Do you know if the transfer house did any editing? If they did, they could have messed up pulldown cadences, making you job tougher.

Another possibility: a drop frame/non-drop frame discrepancy.

Thanks. But the transfer company did not do any editing. What's weird is that we capture from the same machine and bring that footage to another machine and the revise telecine works fine. Apple Suppot advised me that it may be a corrupt Cinema Tools perference file. Or it may be the latest version of Quicktime 7.5. running with 5.1.4 of Final Cut. How ever I look at it, its going to be a long weekend. Is there any other options to fix this problem.

Gawd, I hate QT's recent versions that have more to do with consumer applications than people who try to make a living with it.

If Apple EVER gets back to dealing with professional media software, I'd hope they'd streamline the code for quicktime. Perhaps even Quicktime ProApps: it even sounds good for the marketing weasels.

I think QT's getting bogged down with garbage like movie rentals, iPods and iPhones.

i'd like to iKick Apple where the iSun doesn't iShine.
