Importing files into FCP

Hi,
I am making a film composed of various different clips sent from friends, all shot on different amateur cameras and so sent as different files.
Most are avi which is fine but one friend send 3 clips as MODs which I converted using Episode Pro to WMVs (as FCP did not like the MODs)
It will let me import them but when I go to edit them it freezes and crashes. They are not any bigger in size than some of the avi files I am using so it can't be that. I then tried converting them to Quicktimes and mpegs but it would not even let me import them.
Any ideas why this would happen? Should I convert them to a particular file type?
Thanks.

Why on earth would you convert them to Windows Media when you're working on a Mac?
The AVIs are not fine either. What format are you working in? DV? Uncompressed SD? Something else? Convert them to QuickTime files in whatever specification is appropriate. What frame size and frame rate are you working in? You can use Episode to convert to the correct format, but you have not told us anything at all about the media you're converting except the file architecture. Please be as specific as you can about what the files are, frame size, rate, codec, data rate, everything, and as specific as you can be about where you're going to.
All the best,
Tom

FCP does not work well with AVI's, they should all be converted to Quicktimes in the proper codec that you are editing in.
FCP does not work at all with WMV's. Those files should also be converted to Quicktimes in the proper codec.
FCP does not work with MPEG's.
All files should be Quicktime in the proper codec and frame size you are editing in before importing to FCP. If FCP will not allow you to import the files, then they are either not proper Quicktimes or they are of a codec FCP does not recognize.
