Capture HDV at ProRes using HD-SDI from Sony HVR-1500
by Tony Alznauer on Aug 25, 2008 at 10:40:39 pm

I rented a Sony HVR-1500 to capture HDV source tapes at higher resolution. I've been trying to capture at either ProRes or Uncompressed but FCP gets to a TC break (tape stop/start) and FCP says 'locating TC break'. The deck doesn't do anything while this message is displayed. It gets to a break The same tape(s) and deck captures HDV through FW just fine. Using a Kona 3 with a MacPro when using HD-SDI.

Just for fun I tried setting the deck to downconvert to SD and captures through the SDI at DV, same issue. Is there an issue with the Kona device control with this deck?
Has anyone successfully captured through HD-SDI with this deck?
Any suggestions on what else to try?

Thanks.

Did you have the Kona and deck referenced? If you don't have a reference video signal, then I suspect the Kona will generate a sync signal that you can feed into the deck (I have a Decklink which does this).

Without reference it is more likely that there will be phantom breaks. When you capture via firewire, FCP syncs to the incoming data which may explain the different capture behaviour.

It is also possible to capture as HDV but render in ProRes. It is a setting in sequence settings under the render tab.

[Tony Alznauer] "The deck doesn't do anything while this message is displayed. "

The FW needs to be set to DV not HDV when just trying to control the deck while capturing via HD-SDI or Component. If it's in HDV mode, you'll get continuous phantom TC breaks.

I was capturing via RS-422. I tried the FW capture and I am not getting phantom breaks. However, I came across an actual TC break (7 frame break) and FCP was unable to continue capturing. After a while in which the deck didn't seem to be doing anything, the capture dialogue box states 'finished' even though only part of my original logged clip is captured. I'm thinking to chalk this one up to the HDV format and/or a cameraman mistake (dont know how the tape was run 7 frames forward... power on/off?).

Still, the FW device control is an improvement. Thanks, Walter.

In my book, capturing HDV to ProRes via SDI is no better than using FW. Here's how to do it.

Have a wonderful day.
