which easy set up optimal when using P2 cards (720p footage)
by todd reid on Aug 24, 2008 at 6:28:36 pm

I've been using the AJA IoHD-720p 59.94 Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)

Everything has been working and looking good,
but was just wondering if I've chosen the best option.

The P2 cards don't shoot ProRes. You should be using the DVCPRO HD 720p setting that matches your frame rate.

I used to use that and was having some delays, so I figured, since I have the aja HD, I'd start using prores. I thought it might make things run more reliable. Which they have.

I just wondered what would produce the best experience for me and my client.

I'm starting a new project today, so I'll try your suggestion.

Is there any validity to my thoughts???

[todd reid] "I figured, since I have the aja HD, I'd start using prores."

The I/O HD won't convert the P2 footage to ProRes, so I don't see what this hardware gains for you. Slowing down? How so? I never experienced that myself. I use the AJA Kona 3 DVCPRO HD 720p 23.98 Varicam setting.

Well, when you render you are rendering in ProRes, which is a 10-bit codec vs DVCPRO HDs 8-bit. But your renders will take up a lot more space than DVCPRO HD will. Dunno...if it works, I see no problem.
