Fluorescent Light Buzz
by Tom Prigge on Aug 20, 2008 at 4:20:02 pm

I have an interview done right under a buzzing fluorescent light. The buzz does not make the clip unusable, just annoying. I've tried some filters in FCP with no success. Any suggestion what filter to use and what setting?

Have you completely eliminated the ONLY sure-fire, 100% successful remedy for the situation, which is to re-shoot?

Or are you willing to gamble with the quality of your video on hit-and-miss, after-the-fact techniques?

Why sure, in a perfect world, re-shooting would be the way to go. But that's not feasible. Any useful suggestions appreciated.

Okay then, here's what I'd do using standard tools:

Cut the interview as you need it. THEN add a section at the tail where all you hear is the buzzing light. Export the whole thing as an AIFF, and drag the file into Soundtrack Pro.

In STP, highlight just the buzzing at the tail. Go Process>Noise reduction>Set Noise Print. Then highlight the entire clip and go Process>Noise Reduction>Reduce Noise. Try the preset setting first and apply it. See what you think. If you don't like it, get rid of the action and try again.

When done, just export the clip as an AIFF, and use it in your FCP timeline.

PS: I'm not so sure that I got the Soundtrack Pro terminology 100% right; I'm not at my machine. But it should be close enough so you can play along at home.

Awesome suggestion! This got rid of 90-95% of the buzz. Thanks so much. This suggestion is definitely one I'll print out and keep for future use.

You're talking about noise removal, no? Bias SoundSoap can do this, it is quite remarkable, but I suggest you watch their tutorial before using. It requires at least 2 seconds of your noise in the clear.

Soundtrack Pro can do this too, but I think SoundSoap is much better for it.

Have a wonderful day.

Both of these methods only work well if the "unwanted noise" is in a frequency that doesn't compete with the frequency of your voice talent. If you are lucky, you can eliminate much of the noise without getting the "pinched, tinny echo chamber" effect on your voice print!
