canvas not updating while playing back

Mac 8 core 4GB ram, fiber storage, Studio 2

HD project, uncompressed...playback settings all look correct...playback on monitor is fine through the Kona...but the canvas oes not playback in real-time...it will scrub though, but not play back...i know it's a little setting somewhere...but where? thanks in advance!

if i turn external video off, canvas updates...turn it back on...nothing

well that was it, mirror on desktop was not checked...took me awhile to find it...

the 1 thing I hate most about FCP, (and there are plenty, lol) is that settings are all over the place...

thanks, just needed another brain to pick...

and yes, rebooting fixed a lot of weird playback issues in 5.1 when we ran Black Magic cards, but the Konas are pretty rock solid for us...

This might be far too simple a solution to your problem but when that sort of thing happens for me the first thing I do is quit and re-open FCP. It seems to fix a lot of unexplainable playback issues.
Quite probably not an answer to your question but worth suggesting just in case!

The reason this setting is there is that when you turn off Desktop Mirroring, you reduce the processing necessary by the CPU on playback. Since playout thru your video output is the first priority (in most cases) turning off Desktop display makes sure you have as much system resources as possible available for playout. Comes in handy when you're doing realtime effects, and haven't rendered yet. Or if you're on a slower system , but using higher end codecs, such as ProRes.
