Good tutorial on character modeling...
by Phil Lowe on Oct 12, 2009 at 4:02:06 am

Hi guys.

Ok, I've spent a couple hundred bucks on books and Kurv tutorials and have yet to find an easy-to-follow tutorial on head modeling (got so frustrated, I downloaded Daz, but I'd rather learn how to do this myself.)

For instance, one Kurv free tut tells you how to model a head with splines, but doesn't cover making the mouth. A Kurv pay tut essentially dismisses spline modeling as something the author doesn't really use or need, (so there's not much depth there). Then the books talk about box polys and sub-patches, but I simply don't learn well from reading this stuff. I prefer something done with an A/V approach.

Having said all of that, I've found I've gotten the furthest modeling a head by creating a ball with 8 segments and 8 sides, sub-patching it, and dragging points around on that, but even that leaves me wanting when it comes to creating and shaping edge loops.

So if anyone knows a good (preferably free but will pay) head modeling tutorial, I'd definitely be interested.

BTW, I've been teaching myself LightWave since January 2008 and am finally beginning to get fairly quick at modeling some things. I am a 30 year news video editor by trade, and got into this because I wanted to be able to create 3D news graphics and backgrounds for some of the stuff I do. So I'm a virtual novice when it comes to the finer points of 3D. (Will trade editing lessons for 3D lessons! :) )

Anyway, thanks for any help you can offer this noob. Later.

Here is a method similar to the one I use. It's a speed modeling video, so there are no instructions, but you can see the way it gets built. The main tools used in this video are Move, stretch, rotate, extend, make poly, and connect.

There are many ways to make a head in Lightwave. Finding the way that best works for you can take time.

Also try just searching youtube and google for lightwave head modeling, or Lightwave character modeling, lots of stuff out there.
