What are the recommendations for learning Lightwave from scratch?
I need to get comfortable enough to animate mechanical devices translated from Solid Works. Very basic stuff for most of you here.
Are the DVD instructionals best, books?
I'd lean towards reading the material, so any suggested reads would be appreciated.
I have downloaded all the tutorial files from Newtek, so I am starting there.

Try Kurv Studios and Desktop Images.
Just google them.
There are also a ton of books you can find at amazon.
Hope that helps.

Probably the best individual book you could purchase is "INSIDE LIGHTWAVE", edited by Dan Ablan.
For an incredible FREE trove of clear video presentations, check out William "Proton" Vaughn's 24 hours of Lightwave training videos at:

Also, a hotbed of LW discussion is available at the NewTek site, and at the independant SpinQuad site.
