Car surfacing
by Bob Biestek on Jul 13, 2008 at 12:52:40 am

Hi, I'm working in LW9 on a Pro bono short movie pilot/project that needs to have realistic car surfaces. I would appreciate if anyone could point me to any books, tutorials of just offer me a hand/advice in making the car less cartoony and more realistic.

Spend some time tuning the Texture of reflection. Hit the "T" and use gradient, use "Incidence", and create a gradient from top to bottom, and if needed or wanted, add a point or two to tighten the reflections edge.

You could also use specular/gloss to create a more "pearl" or "glitter" look to the paint using procedurals. Depending on size of the model, size the procedural small enough to make them almost vanish so they're not that noticeable. A subtle bump using tiny, tiny procedurals might do the trick too.

For the rendering, use area light and global illumination. For faster renders, I prefer Final Gather and activate "ambient" to be part of the show for rendering with GI. Ramp up the Ambient in the Light Properties panel, and see how it goes.

PS: Set the Camera to "Perspective camera" or "Photoreal camera", it might create better images, in less time.

Thanks for the in put. I appreciate our time. The technique worked well for what I was doing. It corrected the "cartoony" look.

Try this it helped me when I worked on my first car model (first model actually). I also used a gradient with the incidence angle on the surface itself. Of course it's all about the lighting, and that's how the tutorial helped me.

I rendered this version out of FPrime with virtually no environment. I perfected the lighting later, but I don't have a copy of it on this machine.
