Downloaded 3D object, can't get texture
by Brett Frame on May 8, 2008 at 12:54:33 am

Hello,
I'm new to Lightwave and in a pinch to figure this out. I jumped around through the manuals but can't seem to figure it out.

I downloaded a 3D obj file street trash can

The folder has the OBJ file and a TARGA texture file. When I open the OBJ file in modeler it looks like a simplified paper cup, not a mesh texture like the sample image from the download site looks. In the past I have downloaded other OBJ files which came with objects already named with in the file, not just a bunch of polygons with no names that I could apply images to. When I open this file in modeler all the polygons are there but I have no idea how to get to a mesh surface with the texture map applied.

I will keep looking through my manuals.

thanks,
Brett

I found my answer.
If anyone else is new to this and they had the same question this is how I did it.

In modeler
1. I right clicked and drew a selection line around all of the polygons that made up the body of the trash can.
2. At the bottom of the modeler window i clicked on surface and I was able to name this group (canSides) to use in Layout
3. I moved the model from Modeler to Layout
4. In layout in the surface tab I clicked on the T next to the color listing and selected my image to place over my canSide polygons.
5. Then in the Surface Editor I selected the T next to transparency and loaded my mesh image to make my transparent hole in my mesh. That image is black and white. white is see thru and black keeps the texture image visible.

Thats it.

Later,
Brett
