I'm a newbie with Lightave 8.5 istalled at home on a PC, (soon older IMAC), also istalled onto a Middle School Computer Lab PC, where we'd like to conduct Animation classes. I have a few books (Lightwave Essentials) and have personally taken an Intro to Animation class using Lightwave as well as MOHO (now Anime 5).
How do I start using Lightwave, every time I open the program. I've forgotten what to have open as far as HUB, Modeler, Layout, etc. Also....do i always have to install the USB Dongle...

I use Lightwave everyday and this is my workflow, I am using Ligthwave v9.3 and I know the interface has changed a bit so I'll just give an overview. If I am starting a new project the first thing I do is setup my content directory (you can find this in your preferences tab or under edit>set content directory). A proper Lightwave content directory should at least have seperate folders named: images, objects, and scenes. All in your project directory.
Once I have my content directory setup I can start my project by clicking on the modeler button in the upper right to open modeler. Or I copy assets into the content directory that I will use for my project, that way everything is nicely organized and easy to backup. Then I get to work on my project, usually with Layout and Modeler open.
Also, You need the dongle installed whenever working in Lightwave. You can plug it in a second before you start Lightwave then open up the program and it should work fine.
