Making text bend
by Christopher Grosso on Jun 2, 2008 at 11:20:24 pm

I'm sure this is an easy thing to do, and yes I read the manual etc. I've never really had a need to do much in Livetype but I want to make more use of it because I keep doing things in After Effects.

If I have a line of straight text and a second or so in want to make it bend like a smile how do I go about this? Thanks.

Oooh, that's an easy one. I like the easy ones. Right click (or control click if you have a one button mouse) on the blue line under the text in the canvas. A hidden menu appears - activate control point. You can pull that up or down. If you want, you can right click again and activate smooth in and smooth out. You can also link the endpoints to make a circle.

Have fun

Thanks Sjon. That's the part I was able to figure out before, I can make the bend I just don't know how to animate it from a straight line.

You need to add an effects track and use the offset X in the attributes tab to set the movement keyframes. The text will follow the curve of the line.

Sorry Sjon, I'm not getting it. I start with the text in just a straight line, then say about 1 second in I want the whole thing to bend down into a "u" shape.

I see how to create the shape, I just don't understand how to make it animate from straight to curved.

I'm sure it's simple I'm just not familiar with LiveType. Thanks for your patience and help.

Read my previous comment. If you don't know how to add an effects track and add keyframes, I suggest use look up "adding effects track," and "making keyframes" in your user manual. Under the attributes tab in the inspector window is a slider named offset X which moves the text along the path you have made (it's the blue line that indicates where the text is based). You can use the slider or enter a value into the value window to the left and the text will move along the path's X axis.

Understand. the only motion is that which you program in (size, offset (both X and Y), color, etc.). The text can only follow the blue line (straight or curved)

Sjon,

I appreciate your replies but I sense a bit of sarcasm in your last post ;) I know how to add the actual effects track and how to add keyframes. Admittedly there is probably a very easy way to do this, I just can't figure it out.

I start with the straight line of text. At 1 second in I bend the line to a curve. I don't want the words to slide or move from left to right down the line I simply want the whole line to curve down. I could do this in After Effects I just figured Livetype would have an easier way to do it. I never use LiveType, maybe it's not meant to do custom animations?

Again thanks for your help.

No sarcasm intended. Now that I see what you want (in effect be able to keyframe the text line}, the answer is no. There is no way to keyframe that in LiveType unless you want to spend hours keyframing individual letters. Either AE or Motion can do what you want.
