composite in FCP looks bad with Livetype texture/graphic underneath
by rileym on Apr 14, 2007 at 7:00:18 pm

hello all, and thanks in advance for your help.
i posted in fcp, but haven't found the solution yet.

i'm doing a many layered composite in fcp, and the background that i want to use i've created in livetype. 2 textures mixed together, and 3 simple texts layers that i export as a .mov and then bring into fcp.

in fcp, i've imported a layered .psd file, in which i discard the (plain white) layer 1 from, and then use layers 2-7, which is a graphic of a film strip with 5 photos inside which i bring in 1 at a time in fcp.

the graphic looks fine in fcp UNTIL i bring in the aforementioned livetype .mov of the textured background, and then the photos in the filmstrip graphic look like they lose about half of their resolution. they just look pixelated. like they are about 35 dpi instead of 72. i'm totally mystified by this. any ideas?

thanks in advance for your help!

Is this pre or post render? LiveType, because it's an animation codec, must ALWAYS be rendered in FCP.

yes, post render.
i bring in the livetype graphic on layer 1, bring in the .psd on layers 2-7, hit render, and it looks pixelated.

thanks for your help.
i'd like to work this out today...

The text issue with live type has been driving me crazy as well, and this is what I have figured out to make text look good from live type or even from motion.

First of all it is fine to bring the native livetype file in to fcp but change the codec from its default of ccir 340 or whatever it is to NTSC DV at the bottom of the list and field dominance on. Now go a head and drop livetype file into fcp it may look a little better but still not perfect. Now here is what you will have to do continue working in fcp with a sequence setting of the default of DVCPRO NTSC but before you export to mpeg or whatever setting change the sequence codec setting to ANIMATION while still keeping the field dominance lower ON and hit ok and watch what a huge difference this just made to all the text and any animation you may have done in MOTION. I don't know why it is like this but is the best and only way I have figured out to make everything look great.

I have used LiveType since before it was LiveType (India Titler) and have never had this problem. It sounds like you have set your project settings wrong. Livetype exports only in ANIMATION. It is the only codec that contains an 8 bit alpha channel for clean compositing. Are you sequence settings in FCP set at DVCPRO? For standard definition work, it should be at DV-NTSC. I set my output in LT at CCIR 601 NTSC and output flawless titles and text for FCP. I am not really happy with the way text looks with a 400 Mbs .flv file but that is compression artifacts. If what you are doing works, use it.
