FCP into Livetype
by Tony (TonyCity) on Jun 15, 2005 at 8:20:35 pm

Hello, stupid question. 1) I (think) I know that you can take a FCP piece and "export for Livetype" and if I'm not mistaken it should create a Quicktime - but it doesn't it creates a FCP project file. What's wrong there?

2) So, to bypass that problem I created a quicktime of the FCP portion I want to use, without using the "export for live type". The quicktime has audio and video - beautiful right?

3) When in Livetype, I place a background movie in my current livetype project I'm working on. I'm doing this because obviously I want to set the Livetype perfectly with the video in question and I also want to time the Livetype's with the music, audio etc that I have set in FCP. Now I know, the quicktime I created has audio - - THEN WHY CAN'T I GET/HEAR THE AUDIO IN LIVETYPE?

4) also, when exporting, what's the correct procedure to get back in to FCP - I noticed the export screen size jumps size on me when in FCP so I just import file in FCP, I import not the LiveType export, I don't bother, I just import the Livetype project file (.ipr I believe.)

Please help,
Tony

1.Nothing's wrong there. The project files will work fine in LiveType
2. Right
3. You can't hear the audio in LiveType because LiveType has no audio component (i.e. no audio in LiveType, folks, absolutely non, nada, zip, don't even go there).
4. When you are done in LiveType, save your file and then grab the little icon (it's a LiveType icon) at the top of LiveType's canvas window and drag it into your FCP timeline.*

*You will notice, if you render in LiveType, that when you import the LiveType Quicktime movie into FCP that it will need to be re-rendered again (now you're up to two renders for the same file). The reason for this is that LT uses the Animation Codec (32-bit) and FCP uses the DV-NTSC codec. So save yourself the time and effort, just drag the LT canvas icon to the timeline in FCP and render once.

Livetype not being able to play sound is one of the most annoying aspects of the app. To get around this I place markers in the FCP sequence, and they will appear in LT.

How do I get a Final Cut Express clip, with markers, into LiveType so that the file still shows those markers?

I did an 'Export to LiveType' in FCE, and then tried "Place" and "Place as a Background Movie' in LiveType, but the clip opens without the markers I set in FCE.

Thanks.
