workflow with desktop and laptop
by Bob Cole on Oct 30, 2009 at 1:00:06 pm

I use SmartSound primarily on my desktop MacPro, but often I have to edit on location, for which I use a MacBook Pro with an external hard drive.

When I've bought new disks, I've been installing them via physical disk on both computers. Is that necessary? I've tried copying over the .sds files, with no luck. An earlier post here refers to a "rebuild library" command, which I don't see. In "Preferences" there is an "add album" option, but I don't see the new album's name.

If so, could someone explain to me what files I need? In addition to the big folder of Sound Files, there is a folder called "Encoding" which contains .blx files which refer to some, but not all of the album titles.

Thanks!

Bob C

Hello Bob,

The best option to accomplish what you are trying to do would be to use the Network version of Sonicfire Pro 5. This version allows Sonicfire Pro to store and access all the files that it needs for your library from a location other than the local hard drive, for example an external drive or a network location. Each time you mount the hard drive and run Sonicfire Pro 5 Network, it will sync all of the files behind the scenes for you on both computers.

You can manually copy the files from the Encoding folder and Library folder in the SmartSound directory onto the other machine, but copying and overwriting files manually always has the potential to cause problems.

Regards,
Frank

Replacing System Drive & RAID
by Bob Cole on Nov 6, 2009 at 1:26:34 pm

Thanks Frank. Could you point me to the place on the SmartSound website where the Network Edition is described further? I only see the 4.5 version.
But I'm not sure the Network Edition would help. When I use the laptop, it's for editing on-location, with an external firewire drive that holds both the SonicFire program and the music files. I don't want to risk using that external drive to hold all the music files on a day-to-day basis - I'd rather use the RAID.

Related question: In the next month I'll be replacing the system drive, and also installing a new RAID, for my MacPro. I currently run Tiger. When I replace the system drive I plan to do a "clean install" of Snow Leopard. So: new system drive, new OS, new RAID.

Currently, SmartSound Express Edition is on the "old" system drive and the music files are on the "old" RAID. How can I avoid having to reload each music disk? I make annotations in the "Notes" field of the SmartSound Express Edition when I search for music, and I'd like to keep those if possible.

Thanks - your Tech Support at SmartSound is terrific.

Re: Replacing System Drive & RAID

Hi Bob,

The software was not really designed to run off of an external drive like you are doing, however I think the Network version will still help you. Basically the standard version of Sonicfire Pro allows you to store just the sound files in a custom location, but relies on the local copies of the blocking files, library files, and database files to know what you have owned and installed. The network version syncs all of these files and keeps everything up to date. Even though you are running Sonicfire Pro ET from the external drive connected to your laptop, there are still local copies of the files mentioned that are stored on the laptop drive that would need to be synced up. If you had the network version, you could simply copy the entire SmartSound folder onto the external drive. Then when you set the folder path on the laptop to the root SmartSound folder, it will sync up the blocking files, database files, and library files to the local laptop drive. If you have your home computer mapped to the external drive as well, then any changes you make on the laptop will be synced to the external drive and then synced to the home computer when you connect it. Otherwise you would have to manually copy these files from the external drive onto the laptop each time you made any changes, and any changes made on the laptop would need to be copied back to the external drive, then back to the RAID, which seems pretty cumbersome.

Currently there is not a specific page dedicated to the network version, but you can call our sales line at 800-454-1900 and they will be happy to help you with any questions you might have.

Regarding the migration to the new computer, you should be able to first install Sonicfire Pro 5 on the new machine, then copy the contents of the SmartSound folder from the old machine to the new one, overwriting any existing files, and it should detect everything. If the storage location is different you will need to add the new location in the Folders tab.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Regards,
Frank
