Transferring files from Desktop to an External Hard Drive

I seem to be encountering a strange problem when I try to transfer some quicktime files from my desktop computer over to an external hard drive. When I drag and drop my folder over (which contains approx. 400GB worth of material) the progress bar that pops up tells me it's going to take 280 days!
Here are the details:
My computer > 2.88 GHZ 8 core Intel Tower, 10 GB RAM
The hard drive > connected using eSATA (only other option is USB), with more than enough room to fit the 400GB of material.
When I try to just drag one file over, it still gives me a ridiculous ETA.
I've shutdown my computer, restarted the drive. Didn't do anything.
I've also copied the same material over to another drive with no problem at all (took less than an hour).

Try it via the USB conection. If it is better there then it is ether the esata on the drive, the cable or the esata on the computer that is the problem.
There are no "technical solutions" to your "artistic problems".
Don't let technology get in the way of your creativity!
