Under US law it is technically illegal to discus pay amoung other professionals. Its called collusion and price fixing. You have to decide what you need to make and charge that much.
Or hang out with people that do this kind of work over beers.

Certainly there must be some public resource that outlines typical pays for various job titles... I know I've seen them before, just can't remember off the top of my head... If I'm not mistaken, they are usually government surveys or something of the like...

You can check (Google) archives of "Producer" magazine, which morphed into some other publication last year. Periodically they would do salary surveys.
Also, there are any number of commercial resources that do research and sell it to corporations so that they can judge the going rate for a given postion. Some of these services will allow you to do a search for a limited time. Compensate.com used to provide some salary info. Don't know if they still do.
Or you can check out sites like 2-Pop.com or VFXPro.com and see the kind of money being offered for positions.
In any event, anyone who thinks that employers don't collude, via third parties, to determine salaries and benefits packages is fooling themselves.

3rd party surveys don't count because they are third party surveys. APA did a survey for Advertising photographers and gor a nice call from the Feds saying Don't push you luck by doing that again. Because they are a professional Photographers organization. Businesses know what people are getting paid because they keep logs. Again 3rd party survey is totally legal. You can call the FTC anytime you like and ask them. Geez its illegal to down load MP3's too but people do it everday. Does that make it legal? People don't pay there taxes every year same thing. Those salary surveys are so bad they are useless. I hire compositors I know what my friends make. Why don't you just start a thread Called Post your rate here and see if it stays up. Its not fair. Unions can collude all day long they just call it Collective bargaining.

Rates depend on so many things, the gig you're working on, the location, some are hourly rates with overtime bonus', some are flat rate per week for fixed hours, some are flat rate until its done. As Randy says, the usual way of sussing out what people get paid is to sound out other friends in the business informally over a beer or whatever. I see no problem with asking people up here, but I don't think you'll get much useful info unless you can find another user here who is working in that part of the world, that city, has been working there for a while, doing just that sort of job, and can give you the low down. My advice is start using your contacts, talk to friends of friends, colleagues, etc, ...they'll give you the best feedback.
