Starfield - how do you make this dang thing work?
by Rob Womack on Sep 26, 2008 at 4:37:06 pm

I'm baffled. I'm trying to experiment with StarField, but I'm seeing nothing and can't figure it out.

I know it must be something simple and dumb that I'm not doing: I create a new comp (DVCPro HD 720p 30), then create a new white solid the same size as the comp. I apply DE_StarField, and nothing. I've tweaked the controls, but still see nothing. I thought, maybe it's just a slow render, but after leaving it alone for 1/2 hour, still nothing. I tried a black solid and a piece of HD footage, and still nada.

What am I doing wrong?

Robert, We've discovered a bug which has rendered Starfield broken for the time being. Engineering hasn't given me a fix date yet...

Rob,

I am on a PC so things might act differently. I just did what you said and got nothing. The reason being you don't want to be putting Starfield on a solid. Try applying it directly to your footage or if you want it on a different layer you would need to create a new "Adjustment layer" instead of the solid. You should immediately see soft blue and white stars as the defaults.

Note the "single dot" as star shape is difficult to see.
As far as a bug with it, I have had no problems at all. So that may be Mac specific.
