CF not finding QT

I'm running AE CS3 on Windows XP SP2. CF installed and registered and was always working perfectly till recently tried. I apply CF to a clip and simplified interface opens and all controls appear to work fine. I try to switch to full interface and get a warning I need an earlier version of QT than I have. I cleaned QT out of PC, reinstalled latest version, verified it works with some mov files. Also verified I could render out a mov file from AE. Also cleaned up PC (registry, broken shortcuts, etc.) Nothing seems to enable the full interface to work. Again, it used to. BTW, also restored the PC to a point 2 weeks ago and all works fine except full interface. Can't find a word in the documentation to help (CF or AE!). Can anyone help? Do I need to reinstall AE itself? Will I have to re-register CF? Thanks.

No quick answer for you. There's nothing in the manual as there's not much more to say than what the error message says: Color Finesse is attempting to initialize QuickTime and getting an error.
It looks like there are three reasons why you might get that error message:
1. You don't have QT installed. You do, so that's not the problem.
2. You have an old pre-7.0.2 version of QT installed. Not true in your case.
3. QuickTime fails to initialize for some other reason.
So looking at #3, do you have any third-party codecs installed which might be giving problems? QuickTime interacts with video cards and their drivers so any changes in that area could upset QuickTime. Also check the QuickTime settings and try changing them to see if it makes any difference. Something changed since the full interface was working for you, so I'd concentrate on figuring out what that is.
I don't see anything in our change logs related to this, but I would recommend upgrading to the current version of Color Finesse (2.1.10) so you benefit from any fixes we've made in the last couple of years. You can download the new version from our web site; just be sure to download the "LE" installer so that it accepts your serial number.

Try an older version of QuickTime for Windows, as the latest 7.6.4 update seems to have broken a number of apps. I've found quite a few recent reports of this with apps other than Color Finesse.

Bob, thanks for the input. Here's where I stand. I did download the latest CF, but before I tried to install it, I attempted to open the older version to read the serial. Since I had dumped QT, CF wouldn't open. Thus, I downloaded and installed an older QT (7.6.2). I also created a comp in AE CS3 to apply CF to so I could open it. This time, on trying to open CF (the original) it told me "Sorry, CF doesn't recognize this format!!" The format was an HDV mpeg2 which, as you know,is not a sequence of complete frames. As I was about to go look for an avi, CF did in fact open in full interface. I'm guessing it had to wait for AE CS3 to decompress the video first. Does this sound right? Anyway - it's working!! I'm assuming I should still go ahead and install the latest CF LE any way. I presume it will take care of the older version? Thanks, I appreciate your quick response over the weekend. Dale

Glad to hear you've got it working.
The "Sorry, CF doesn't recognize this format!" message is actually caused by an earlier version of Color Finesse having installed a bogus preset file. That's what is in the wrong format, not your footage. You'll get the error message each time the Color Finesse UI launches.
To get rid of that annoying message, the simplest thing to do is to remove all the presets, then re-install the latest Color Finesse 2.1.10. You can just delete the entire presets folder "c:\Program Files\Synthetic Aperture\Color Finesse 2\Color Finesse Presets\".
