render settings

Im a newbie and have an issuing seeing the fog feature of a spotlight. I have been learning on a machine here at work and Im sure that it is a feature that is turned on or off, but I can't see the "fog" nor the glow features of a spotlight when doing a test render. Is it the settings or the hardware?
