Standby & Update on Shut Down Problesm

I've been experiencing problems with my Computer not wanting to go to Standby mode. Also when I choose the shut down option, it says it's doing update 1 of #(varies) and it's supposed to shut down when complete. I get up the next morning to see the same shut down screen still doing update 1 of #.

I've tried going to the update site and doing updates but it says my computer is up to date.

It also seems to be running at 50% cpu capacity regardless of what I'm doing.

Few easy things to try first. Turn off Automatic Updates. Clean out all temp files and clean registry - Glary Utilities will do this well. http://www.glaryutilities.com/
Reboot, turn on automatic updates. Let us know if it is still giving you problems with the updates.

Then, do Ctrl-Alt-Del, go to Task Manager. Look at what process is running and eating up your CPU cycles. Let us know.
Also, some details on your PC would be good, like what OS you are running...

Thanks Todd,

I did as instructed. I have a program called RegCure and it cleaned up like 276 Registry Errors. When I rebooted and turned the Auto-updates back on I tried to put the computer in standby mode and it worked. The percentage of CPU usage was also way down. However when I shut the computer down for the night it again said it was going to do an update and that it would shut down when complete. So I went with it and it ran all night with the messague Installing update (1 of 1). Perhaps I will try the utility program you recommended. Any other ideas are appreciated.

My system information is as follows:
Microsoft XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002, Service Pack 3
Gateway GTS238E
Intel Core 2
6300 @ 1.86GHz, 1.86GHz, 0.97 Ram

That's good to clean the registry, hope you backed the reg up first. :)
Only thing is that won't clear out all your temp files. Glary Utilities or CCleaner will do it easily enough.

What is the update that won't install? There are different routes you can take depending on what update it is.

Such as, if it's a dot net prob you can try this fix: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2005/04/08/406671.aspx

If its due to a large number of .inf files, you can try this one: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-5034446.html

Keep in mind, you may have had more than one problem. Sounds like the reg clean may have cured one.

I Don't know what updates wont install. How can I find that out?

Sorry, had to go back and re-read original post again... When you went to MS it says you are all up to date?

How 'bout this...
Try deleting all your downloaded Windows Updates. It's possible there is a corrupt file in there.

Stop the Automatic Updates service
Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Delete the contents of the Download folder
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Open the Download folder.
Delete all contents of the Download folder.
Close the window.

Start the Automatic Updates service
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

I'll try that. I think the problem was the Auto Updates for office 2007. Since I got my copy from someone else it is not registered and I think that was causing a problem. Those have all been deleted now. Hope that solves the problem.
