HP xw8200 20 to 30 minutes to shutdown
by Daniel Edelman on Oct 2, 2009 at 7:56:53 pm

Hey folks. One of my HP xw8200 avid workstations (XP SP2) is taking between 20 and 30 minutes to shutdown. The funny thing is, this comes after re-imaging the system with a clean image that I've been using successfully on all 23 of my other xw8200's since april. Here is what I've tried so far:
Re-imaged again.
installed a new HD and re-imaged.
Individually removed a pci board and tried again (did this for everything except video card).
Note: Nothing extraneous is plugged it (no usb, FW, ext HD, etc). The only difference in setup since I re-imaged it is a different KB, mouse (both ps/2) and monitor (SVGA using a DVI adapter).
Any thoughts?
-Daniel

That is strange. KB/Mouse/Monitor shouldn't cause that...
Same RAM, cards in the same slots and everything? Absolutely nothing else different about that setup?

Is there any Error or Warning events being recorded from the shutdown?

The machines are all identical. They're turn-key avid machines.
Here is my application console:

Daniel - looks like it is having issues with the Windows Update services. What I've gathered is that it gets stuck contacting the Windows Update Server. Do you see svchost using a great deal of cpu time? (ctrl-alt-del, Task Manager, Processes)

For a quick fix, kill Windows Update and let us know how that works. Although that's not a solution, it will help to trace the problem.

If that does take care of the problem, there are numerous ways of dealing with that problem here: http://ask-leo.com/comments_003020.php

If not, let us know.
Good Luck! TC

I have automatic updates disabled already.
I decided to plug in a network cable, obtain an ip, and shutdown. This time the shutdown process took even longer... some thing like 1.5 hours!
During normal operation, svchosts (there are 5 of them) isn't taking up any cpu at all. As far as mem usage, one of them is using 18,436k and the others are all around 2 and 4,000k.

I completely disabled automatic updates in the services section of the management console (I thought It was already but I guess not). Now the last 2 events do not come up (103 and 101). The last event now is:

Re: HP xw8200 20 to 30 minutes to shutdown

Are there any System Events happening on shutdown (Warnings or Errors)? The application events shouldn't really be causing this - they look like startup events anyways.

But to take care of your other Application Events - the warnings. Are you using the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) service for anything? Normally, you shouldn't need it on a workstation (I've used it on Server 2003 systems), but I don't know if any of your software requires it, such as Unity. You could disable that service to get rid of the two warnings you are getting, or do a Registry edit. But I don't think that will take care of your shutdown problem either, but it's worth a shot to narrow down.

From MS KB832790:

To stop these events from occuring, add the TraceFileName and the TraceLevel values to the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SNMP_EVENTS\EventLog\Parameters
TraceFileName
Type: REG_SZ
Value: null (blank)
TraceLevel
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 32 (0x20)

Here's my 2 cents -

In all these times you have spent waiting for it to shutdown 'normally' or troubleshoot, a fresh version of XP SP2 could have been installed. Perhaps it is something in the image which you are using for re-imaging. Whatever!

When the gremlins cannot be discovered, best advice then is to -
1. install a fresh version of XP SP2
2. Image this.
3. Install the cards, etc and drivers and necessary applications for your periphereals
4. Image this and call it 'After drivers and apps'.
5. Now get some work done and delete the old image you have been using.

Thats it... I pulled the trigger. I wiped the HD clean and rebuild my avid system from the ground up. And guess what? It shuts down perfectly. I've been installing all my software/drivers one by one, restarting each time, and have had no problem.

I'm making an image of this current drive and then i'm going to default back to my old image. I'll keep everyone updated.

Way to go!

Been there, done that myself with my old Canopus DvStorm system with the older NLE app. Lived with it for years with a forced shutdown everytime (keep finger on Power button till it shuts down). The same card & system with the newer NLE (Edius) does not cause a problem with shutdown.
