Got a PC and was wondering...

A friend gave me his P4 1.6Ghz 2gbRam 40GB gateway and I was thinking of running AVID on it, but I don't know what version would work best with those specs. Oh and I installed 32-bit XP Professional on it already.
I'm aware that I'll need to get a firewire pci card installed and a larger hard drive, but I was more concerned about the correct version and where I should get it from.
Any suggestions or help would be gladly appreciated.

Let me just say that if you are planning on purchasing AVID software at a around $2995, I think you'd be better off just purchasing a new $500 system for it, rather than try to put it on that old PC which doesn't come close to the minimum requirements for AVID. Media Composer is now the entry level.
It is possible you could locate an old version of the free AVID DV software that AVID was dishing out many years ago, but that would be tough to find with a working key now. I used to have it on an old P4 2.0Ghz Dell PC, but the damn software rarely wanted to work on it. I think that was around the time AVID went to PC.

Todd is correct. Getting a new hard drive is all good, but your RAM is a major issue. 2GB, almost 1 of which will be taken up by system resources with XP, is going to be a huge bottleneck and below the min requirements. 500-1000 bucks gets you a great system nowadays, and you could ebay your Gateway system parts for about 100-150 maybe. Might as well do it right and wait to get a Intel i7 w/ 64-bit Windows 7 so you can expand your memory capacity and have a more efficient OS.
