Win2k "Found New Hardware" wizard interfering with printer install

Trying to install new Canon MX700 printer to Windows 2k machine. New Hardware wizard keeps popping up which halts the canon software installer, wizard can't find driver - even though I point it right to it, it says "an error occurred". Have tried removing/uninstalling driver, re-starting, re-installing using run line command (right click drvrsetup file) but still nothing.
Haven't called canon support yet (working on this one in the wee hours) but will try on Saturday. In the meantime, thought I'd post here and see if anyone has any advice, or has encountered a similar situation.
Found some tips in various (read 'non-trusted') forums about editing the registry, but that's a little intense for me.
Other than upgrading to a supported OS, does any one have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

Not sure about W2K, but with XP all these years, I usually 'Cancel' the wizard and go ahead with the driver installation which usually solves it. If after driver install, you still have a ? mark aainst an 'Unknown Device' in Device Manager, either right-click on that and 'Update' the device driver or reboot the system for it to auto-install (auto-link actually) the drivers to the device.

I cancelled the wizard, but the canon installer won't go any further. I tried to wait it out, but after 20 minutes or so I gave up. I haven't had a chance to try Perch's suggestion about the firmware yet, and I actually have gotten two e-mails back from Canon support with suggestions to find and delete ".inf" files an dthen try to re-install. So I'll add yours and report back if I solve it.
Thanks Thomas.

Talked to Canon Tech Support tonight, and they helped me with one basic issue: turns out the hardware wizard is looking for drivers for my USB controllers. Device manager shows two USB controllers with yellow question/exclamation marks. I've got an add-on USB/Firewire card in addition to the two mother board built-ins, so I'm going to have to dig a little and see if I can figure out the problem with the USB controllers. Canon's tech says that If I can get it into a valid usb port that I can get it installed, no problem. Funny thing is, thats the same USB port that we had the old Canon multifunction hooked into -
BEGIN RANT which worked just fine except for the waste ink tank being full which requires $100 in service which is more than we paid for either the old one or the brand new one that I can't seem to recognize with my trailer park WIndows 2k dinosaur. END RANT
So I'll have to report back. I'll try re-seating the USB PCI card, but I can't imagine the USB port on the motherboard working with one computer and not another.

A little cleaning up of your un-connected USB connections may be required as a first step to finding a solution. Though for XP, I don't think procedure is any different for W2K, so do the following -
To View nonpresent devices in Windows XP’s Device Manager follow this procedure
* Go to Start, right-click My Computer, and select Properties.
* In the System Properties dialog box, select the Advanced tab and click the Environment Variables button.
* In the Environment Variables dialog box, locate the System Variables panel and click New.
* In the New System Variable dialog box, type DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES in the Variable Name text box and type 1 in the Variable Value text box.
* Click OK twice.
* To view the nonpresent devices, go to Start, right-click My Computer, and select Manage.
* Click Device Manager, pull down the View menu, and select Show Hidden Devices.
Next, the clean up -
In Device Manager, (having enabled "Show Hidden Devices") under the sub-categories "Storage Volumes" and "Universal Serial Bus Controllers", right-click on any LIGHT GREY icons/devices and Uninstall them. May take some time depending on how many there are in your system. DO NOT UNINSTALL the DARK GREY items as these are currently connected and present devices.
If there are any showing for "Printers", "Disk Drives", etc...you may do the same, i.e. uninstall the light grey devices.
OK your way out.
Now try installing your new device. This clean up has worked for others and myself when having seemingly unsolvable problems with installing or having Windows recognize a USB device. Hopes it works for you.

Cool, now I have something to do this weekend. Seriously, thanks Thomas. I'll try that. I did try uninstalling them in device manager. I'm also going to look and see if I got a disk when I got the usb/firewire card (it was about $3; I bet I got what I paid for.)
Again, I'll report back. Thanks.
