Vista Video playback with tears/horizontal misalignment?
by Anders Hattne on May 3, 2009 at 10:15:20 pm

Hi,
I've had this problem for quiet a while now, and I'm not sure if it was there from the beginning or appeared suddenly.
What I get (in After Effects, Quicktime and even playing DVDs) are misaligned horizontal lines rising in video playback.
This is usually noticeable on long vertical lines when there is rapid motion and looks like a few blocks (an inch or so high) are flickering with a 3 frame delay or something.

I've updated my graphics drivers (quadro fx 1700) on Vista 64bit.
I read it could have to do with "Tripple buffering" and or "Buffer Flipping mode" or "page flip mode".. I've tried changes there but with no result.
If you have any advice on what I can do, and or what the "phenomenon" is called.. I'd gladly hear it!

Does your motherboard have a VGA connection? Try that to rule out video card or monitor as the issue.

You could try uninstalling the software and drivers for the card - keep the new driver handy. Power down the PC, pull the card and re-seat it (blow out the inside while you are there!) Power up and re-install with the new driver.
It's possible a shared file got changed by a newer program, but definitely sounds like it is graphics card related.

There's a good chance this is the gfx card, although it is still good to rule out other possibilities. I realize it is a large chunk of money to upgrade to a Quadro 4000+ model. However, a 9800GTX+ can be bought for $100 after rebate, and it's 256-bit instead of your 128-bit, and it has almost 6 times the memory bandwidth than your quadro.

Just want to say thanks for all your replies (thought I'd be notified when there was a reply but that wasn't the case..)

I'm quiet busy at the moment (which is good!) but I'll try some of your advice as soon as I can.

Thanks again.

No!! Not yet. It might have gotten better or I've gotten used to it.
I remember wanting to contact nVidia about it but I couldn't find a quick remedy on their page.

I'll try to get back to this problem shortly..
Let me know if you get somewhere!
