Upgrading my PC
by Joel Robinson on Oct 28, 2008 at 11:20:27 pm

I have a year old HP desktop with a new HD video card installed into it. I am a graphic artist but I am not too educated on actual computer hardware and software capabilities. I can use any Adobe CS3 program ok, but it just seems a little bit slow overall. I was hoping someone could send me in the right direction for upgrading my computer for me to be running these programs faster.

Thanks!

hello...

the quickest way to get more speed is always to get more ram - dunno how much you have, but if your computer is only a year old, your processor should be fine...so i'd start with ram...

Joel - does it seem slow updating the screen since adding the new video card? Or is the PC itself that seems slow rendering or opening programs? Joel's suggestion of more RAM could certainly help, how much do you currently have?

I have 3GB of ram. The computer itself isn't really slow, it is mostly in rendering, and such, where it's unbelievably slow.

3 GB of RAM should be enough. I hate to say it, but it could be what you are rendering, and what sort of processing power you have. Also, do you have separate drives for video or renders (whatever you happen to be rendering), such as SATA II drives? If you are rendering to the OS system drive that will create a bottleneck as well, particularly if it is a PATA drive.
