hi, im very new to all this, but i hopes someone would help me out.
im planning to upgraded to a newer window version (win XP Pro)..can it be done with just upgrading it or i have to do a clean install by reformatting the whole hard disk....
and does upgrading to win XP Pro means that my window Office will be newer version too? im currently usingOffice 2000 which is preinstall in my computer.
and how a bout all my printer and scanner...do i have to reinstall after upgrading my OS?
and can my cpu be faster by adding additional RAM....my system is as followed:

If you were my customer, I would not recommend that you upgrade, unless you are really bored. The chances are things would work well are slim. Your computer is just too old and needs at least 512 MB RAM. The upgrading process is just too buggy.
Your Office will be gone.

Office is not part of Windows XP. Your Office came with your HP, not ME.
The problem with spending time or $ on an old PC is that is often wasted as the PC is past it's reliable lifespan...it may look like new, but it is a POS.

Only possible solution is to download and install OpenOffice 2.x but I'm not sure if it will run on Win Me and PIII. Check at http://www.openoffice.org
It is open source freeware, and is compatible with MS Office version ????. in any case, OpenOffice will read, write, and save to MS docs, Excel files, and Powerpoint. I think the only version of MS Office it is not compatible with is the latest versions that save to the new MS document formats. Otherwise, works like a dream come true, for free.

I have to agree:
Ditch this machine. For $500 you can get a newer, much faster, pre-built system from Dell or HP or someone, and get the right deal they will throw in a nice new flat screen LCD monitor. With the stats on your computer it sounds like you have a 15 inch CRT (tv style) monitor =)
Even a new, cheap laptop will be faster than what you have now, and you can get an OEM version of Office for a discount with most new computers.
Make friends with one of us computer dorks... we talk strange languages, interface with computers better than we do humans, and we tend to give away old hardware when we upgrade. Its how my friends get their new computers, I give away hardware more powerful than what you have! I have gigs and gigs of RAM laying around that would likely work in your system. And most of us computer dorks can always use more friends and less time in front of our supermachines =)
