installing Pro Tools without having Digidesign harware

It is possible to install Pro Tools (like installing Nuendo for example) on a system without having any Digidesign hardware but a simple onboard sound card ? Which is the way?

I tried it but it wanted the hardware which I had to connect.

I have only ever worked on hardware-assisted ProTools systems and I cannot recall ever seeing a software-only version. Years back they had a crippled ProTools Lite or somesuch, but I haven't seen or heard of anyone using it in years. I am about to buy a new ProTools system and when I talk with the people at DigiDesign, I will see if there is a software-only version nowadays. Maybe there is. That said, I sure don't recall one.

I haven't seen a copy of ProTools Free for quite some time. It has been officially discontinued.
