HDV to Avid to DVD Studio Pro - Question

This is a question that straddles some forums but I'll try it here.
I have a project shot on HDV that I need to burn to a DVD. It is currently sitting in an Avid Adrenaline at full 1080i resolution. I am having trouble putting it through the following chain to achieve good results:
Avid - QT export - Compressor - DVD Studio Pro
I have tried a couple settings for the QT export which results in a pretty good-looking file (ranging from 3 to 10gb) but by the time I send it through Compressor at the highest quality and burn it, I basically lose my blacks.
Can someone give me advice on the following:
What kind of QT export setting should I use? What setting in Compressor should I use? Anything else?
I'm more of a production guy and while I definitely understand this process, I am not up-to-date as far as codecs and such are concerned.

Export from Avid to ProRes HQ SD 16:9. Then from there go MPEG-2 highest quality 2-pass. If you're losing gamma you might need a more strict color correction pass to even everything a bit more before going to MPEG2.
