Re: how do you use 2 AVID Videoraid SR at once by Rich Campbell on May 14, 2008 at 8:31:54 pm
Hi Bob,
The controllers on the VideoRaid SR and ST have the necessary SAS ports to add another unit. All managed with the supplied configuration tool and the systems OS.

Hi Rich,
can you keep linking additional SAS chassis, or is there a "one time expansion" limit ? It would be typical for someone who buys a 5 bay, then wants to add more and more and more, even though they should have purchased the 16 bay at the beginning.

Hi Bob,
The supported configuration for expanding the ST or SR will allow you to add one ST unit or one SR channel per SAS bus.

Re: how do you use 2 AVID Videoraid /more questions by Bob Zelin on May 17, 2008 at 4:32:54 pm
Rich,
thank you very much for your reply.
I have not seen the new AVID storage in person, but are you sure about the answer that you just gave me. The new AVID storage appears to be the AIC Xtore XJ100, and at NAB, Xtore told me that you could daisy chain up to 128 drives on a single SAS/SATA buss. Doesn't this mean that I can keep adding on AVID VideoRAID ST boxes over and over and over, simply by adding a mini SAS cable ?
One more question - is AVID going to use the ATTO R380 card for the new drive arrays, or the ATTO R348 ?
Re: how do you use 2 AVID Videoraid /more questions by Rich Campbell on May 19, 2008 at 4:16:01 pm
Hi,
Let me clarify. First, it is the R380 SAS card that is used. As far as SAS expansion for the SR and ST, it is not supported at this time, let me revise.
ST = 2 units per workstation support
SR = 1 unit per workstation support
This is what we’ve (Avid) tested and qualified.
Daisy chaining is a possibility with this technology, but at this point, it will not be supported by Avid.
I hope this answers your concerns.
